The RAI and MIA datasets estimate the dispersion of authority away from central states to subnational governments and international organizations respectively. The Regional Authority Index (RAI) measures the authority exercised by regional, metropolitan, and indigenous governments in 96 countries, including all larger polities in the world. The Measure of International Authority (MIA) estimates the authority and the policy scope exercised by 76 international organizations (IOs). Both datasets provide annual estimates that can be disaggregated in smaller components. RAI and MIA are ongoing data projects, which have benefited from funding by the European Commission and several national funding agencies.
