This year’s two-day conference is devoted to the impact on politics, including consequences for cleavage structures, conflicts and actors, politicisation and mobilisation, party politics, populism, European identity and solidarity.

The goal of the conference is to understand how the multiple crises the European Union and its member-states have been confronted with have (1) created new conflicts and changed existing ones and (2) transformed governance structures and introduced new ones.

Over the past two decades Europe has been hit by a close sequence of emergencies: the Euro crisis, the refugee crisis, Brexit, Covid-19 and the war in Ukraine. The cumulative nature of these crises is characterised by the transition from one emergency to the next. While the existing scholarship has addressed the effects of these crises from a variety of standpoints, the broad impact of their interplay, overlap and their multi-dimensional nature needs further investigation. As the title suggest – reflecting the two components of the European Governance and Politics Programme – the focus of the two parts of the conference is twofold:

The EGPP Annual Conference 2023 is devoted to the impact on politics. This includes consequences for cleavage structures, conflicts and actors, politicisation and mobilisation, party politics, populism, European identity and solidarity. Divisions are analysed form a territorial (i.e. European integration) perspective and functional (i.e. comparative politics) perspective.

The EGPP Annual Conference 2024 will be devoted to the impact on governance. This includes consequences on institutions, processes, policies and policy instruments, representation and effectiveness and technocracy, and the multi-level interaction between member-states and EU.

More information is included in the detailed concept document available on the conference web page and circulated to all participants.
