This book launch focuses on Vivien Schmidt’s newly published book, The Power of Ideas and Discourse in Political Analysis: A Discursive Institutionalist Perspective (Oxford, 2026).
The book offers a broad appraisal of how ideas and discourse are used by policymakers and citizens to interpret the world, communicate with one another, and mobilise for collective action. Drawing on examples from research on capitalism and democracy, international diplomacy and human rights, as well as environmental, economic, and social policy, conservatism, neoliberalism, socialism, and populism.
During the book launch, we will learn about the discursive institutionalist perspective on the construction of meaning, the dynamics of change, and the exercise of power, alongside its philosophical foundations in the philosophy of science and social science. At a time of significant political upheaval, with populism and authoritarianism on the rise, understanding how ideas and discourse shape political life is more relevant than ever.
